Engaging with Healthcare Systems often leaves patients overwhelmed by the experience. This often results in patients accepting whatever level of care they were given, or worse avoiding engagement with these systems. However as society and the world evolves, embracing a more consumer driven approach to service delivery, people’s expectation as to what they should be demanding from their healthcare experience continues to rapidly increase.
These higher expectations and demand for better patient outcomes, combined with longer life expectancy and more equitable access to care, creates a significant challenge for healthcare delivery.
The challenges of the Pandemic created a “can do” mentality and approach. Opportunities to innovate and drive change, at a pace not seen previously in healthcare, were born out of a period of great adversity for all .
We need to accept the responsibility the patient now has to play in supporting their care journey. In the same way patients are becoming a more demanding consumer of healthcare services, the healthcare sector needs to require more of the patient.Simply put, build an environment that positively engages and facilitates patients to actively contribute to their own care journey.
Adding the patient, as a contributor, allows the medical workforce to concentrate their energy on the areas they can have more meaningful impact, reducing their time spent on other necessary but distracting tasks. This approach has the potential to rapidly grow healthcare resources and therefore reduce some of the pressure on the projected headcount increases as envisaged by WHO.
